Just in time for summer...
« on: May 22, 2012, 06:09:00 PM »
As galaxy season was upon us, I realised I needed something with a bit more focal length than my 65EDQ and AT 8 F/4.  After careful consideration I decided to let the AT8 go to make room in my closet and help fund a new purchase.  While helping out at the Astrotroniks booth with Jay, I had some spare time to roam the floor and came across a few OTA's I almost pulled the trigger on.  One of them being the ES 127 carbon fiber which looks quite elegant in person but as we all know, you can't judge a book right?  I read several reviews about the triplet and decided to hold off due to reports from several folks that use them for AP.  At $1999 the ES 127 package is a terrific bargain for the OTA, case, diagonal and illuminated finder.  NEAF passed, I finally sold my AT8 that following week and was ready to begin my quest for a new OTA.  I was litterally teetering on what to choose and at some point Jay mentioned I should go for a Tak FS...well maybe he may have twisted my arm a tad.   He can be quite influential but I trusted his advice and held out a bit longer until I managed to find one in excellent condition.  Sure it's a 4" doublet but I've heard the legendary optics and workmanship have tendency to blow some larger aperture triplets out of the water.  I really look forward to using her for AP AND visual.  I'm warming up my TV's as I type this.  So without further adieu here she is...

Congrats on a great scope Greg, you'll love it. There are only two drawbacks to owning a Tak - 1) the adapters are pricey and 2) you may never want to sell it!

Congrats Greg  :yahoo: :yahoo:

You are going to love it, I know I loved mine.  You are going to NEED, for imaging, the CAA (Camera Angle Adjuster), a Field Flattener, and a micro focuser.  Tak and FT make nice ones.  I used the Tak and Jay has the FT now.

I know exactly that you mean about longer focal length....I have a little (well not so little) surprise due in before 10:30am tomorrow !!!!!!

In regards to the micro focuser, the FT unit is better IMO. The Tak version I used for a while had a spongy feel to it - not so with the FT.

Goog insight Mike, I never used the FT one.  Having a FT focuser on my Borg I can assume it would be better based on using mine.
