REGISTAR software
« on: March 26, 2012, 11:31:02 PM »
Hi all,  Thanks for the Noel Carboni thread about DSO enhancement,  I have it and never used it, It's very cool.
My question is about REGISTAR software. I see most of you use it.  Do you need this software to do multiple night of imaging, or is it mainly for LRBG and Ha, ect imaging.  I have an SBIG ST8300C and a T1i, would I be able to combine images form both cameras?

Its a nice program to have. It excels at combining data of different image scales. Your normal SW should be able to combine data from different nights. I have it but haven't really used it. I mainly use Maxim, which I have used to combine images of different scale, lrgb, hargb, etc. What SW do you use for your stacking and pre processing?

As Jason mentioned know Maxim will do the same thing, as will most other pieces of imaging software.  However, I use Registar, as it never fails to align images (I've had some stacks where Maxim failed to align).  I've also used it to find things in my images (like the soap bubble nebua).  It will also do more than just overlap and align images, it will microscopically morph each stack so that the stars match exactly.  It also is great for Mosaics.  A 1 x 2 or 2 x 1 mosaic is pretty easy to assemble, but a 2 x 2 is much more difficult.  I used it for a 2 x 4 mosaic and it matched the overlap perfectly, every time.

Is it needed, probably not.  Is it worth the money, Absolutely!

Thanks for the feedback on Registar.  I use Images Plus V4.25. Sounds like it would work ok.  But it sounds like it would be a great program down the road.

Registar is A+   I also use CCDSTACK 2 as it will also do a fine job at aligning 2x2 images into 1x1

IP's registration works pretty well, but it can be a little finicky.  I've switched almost exclusively to Registar, as Eric said - it NEVER fails.  Even images taken with different scope/camera combinations will register wirhout problem so long as there is enough there to get a good overlap.  Well worth the $$ IMO.

IP and CCDStack often fail to register my subs, especially if they're noisy.  RegiStar has failed a few times, until I gave  its routine that compensates for noise a chance.  Since then it has worked every time.  Sometimes one especially bad sub may stump it, and I'll just throw that one out.

I usually calibrate my subs first, import them to RegiStar for registration, then bring them back into CCDStack for data rejection and combining.

The user interface is a different sort of animal, but if you give yourself some time to get used to it. . . .  Their CS folks have given me reasonably quick and accurate answers.  I'd hate to be without it.   I can't imagine that you'd ever be sorry for buying it.

Thanks Joe. I'm planning on getting Registar ASAP. Everyone seems to like it.  I just sold my Orion EON 80mm, and bought a Starizona SCT .75 reducer/corrector.  Supposed to arrive friday.  Give it a try with my C8.
