IC1396 in Ha
« on: August 14, 2011, 10:43:38 AM »
Hey guys,

Grabbed this data of IC1396 on Thursday night. Conditions were great except for the 97% full moon. This is my first attempt at 15 minute subs with the DSLR. The ending temperature was down to 60.5 degrees so noise wasn't overwhelming. It's 10 900 second 800iso subs with the NP101 at 540mm and 13nm Ha filter. Probably could have framed it better with the 0.8 reducer. Needs another nights worth of data to smooth off the rough edges but at least it was a night out!

Thanks for looking
Bob

looking good, as usual! you've got the guiding tamed with 15 minute subs, is that the longest you've pushed it ever?

Thanks guys! I didn't want to call this another test image but in reality it is. So far PHD has been performing better each session and I feel confidant that it will continue to do so. I think that 15 minute+ subs are going to be possible for fall imaging and I can't wait for the longer, cooler nights!

Jay, I tried 15 minute subs before but had too much flexure to make it worth while. Now I'm only limited by how far I can push the filters I'm using. Flex is down to just small fractions of a pixel per sub which is better than I had hoped for.

Looks great Bob!  Are you saying that you *used* a 0.8x reducer, or could have?  How does the reducer/flattener work with your np101?  We've been seeing some discussion on another group about those not working very well with corrected refractors.

Thanks Craig and Mike!

I didn't use a reducer for this pic Craig. TeleVue makes a dedicated 0.8x reducer and a separate large format flattener for the NP series scopes. I have the NPR-1073 reducer but haven't figured out how to attach it to the OAG yet. For now I'll still have to use a guide scope when using the reducer. I have a 50mm finder to guide scope conversion that still needs a test run

Ah, ok.  For some reason, I was thinking a WO 0.8x FR/FF (no idea why)... makes more sense that TV has one that's made for the scope.  Interesting about the trouble fitting it to the OAG though... what kind of threads does it have?  The TS-OAG's have all kinds of adapters available...I'd be floored if there wasn't one to work.  Although you'd probably have to get it from Germany - unless there is another TS dealer here in the U.S. since Teton went out of business.

Craig I have to thank you for recommending a second look at TS in Germany. Went back to their site and there it was!! I wasn't really sure of all of the proper dimensions but after a little research I found it was the M65/M45 reducer. I placed the order yesterday morning and was FLOORED to see it waiting for me when I got home today!! WAY COOL!! It fit perfectly...spacing and all. I remember discussing with David that I was a little hesitant about ordering equipment from the EU. So far so good. Thanks again.

Yep, next-day! Shipping was a bit high, 31 euros, but it was the only shipping option listed. Really can't complain. :yahoo:
