@Derek - Perhaps, but I believe that would have simply incurred more noise to have to deal with. Then you just have to fight off the noise and that will generally result in a blotchy background. One of the intriguing things about PI, is the ability to perform many of the functions while the image is still linear. Our typical workflow was to calibrate, align, stack and then go right to stretching. Not so in PI...you can perform deconvolution, noise reduction, etc. BEFORE you perform the non-linear stretch.
As for the stars, yes, there are more fainter stars in the reprocess. However, to be fair, we did some star reduction in the original. Now we did some in the reprocess as well, but it behaves a little differently in PI - effectively "preserving" some of the fainter stars.

After seeing what David & Les have been doing with PixInsight, T & I decided to download the trial and give it a shot too. Especially since we are having a hard time capturing any new data. Bottom line, we saw enough promise in the 45 day trial that we've purchased a permanent license. In short, we're pretty amazed at what can be done in PI. Here is our first result and no doubt we don't know all of the ins-and-outs of the software yet. Original Medusa in Ha (processed in ImagesPlus and Photoshop)  Reprocessed completely in PixInsight

It was so great to meet Jason, Greg, Mike & David! Sorry we missed you, Les. NEAF was great and we had a real nice time. Spent most of the day at the Sky Watcher, Celestron, Astronomy Magazine, QSI and Stellarvue booths. We met so many people that we've talked to online, it was nice to put a face with the text :) We certainly hope we can come back!!

Hi Roberto - I think the others have given you plenty of things to try. One thing we notice with our 8" Edge, is you need to give it PLENTY of cool-down time. The stars will down right look awful if you don't do this. Not sure that's the issue you are seeing or not, but could be helpful.

Outstanding Bob! I know Mike is going to work on alignment in his next round of improvements for IP. In the meantime, we use Registar for just about all alignment operations - highly recommended if you don't have it. It will also resize the 2x2 images to match up to the 1x1's which is nice.
Don't try to fight that horizontal blooming...it doesn't matter how long/short the exposure is. We did some testing on our 8" EdgeHD and a crazy bright star... a <1 sec image showed the blooming. Since then, we just shoot color at 1x1.
